Happy long weekend, Houzz community! What is the funniest, most bizarre outdoor design choice a client ever dug their heels in on? Drop your favorite patio stories below!
We’ve not had anything too wild yet. We’re pretty lucky so far!
lights, lights, lights… client went crazy with lighting in the yard. and sound, precise locations of speakers for perfect sound throughout the over 1/2 acre yard!
My client breeds show dogs. We created a maze with a jumping area with appropriate fencing that does not obstruct the view and a water feature for cooling off.
Not so crazy but we had a client replace their side yard with a half-sized basketball court pretty close to the street.
They pulled all the landscaping and started over but while it was cut down, and new, younger trees planted, the entire neighborhood saw it, and had to walk by it as they were right in the middle of everything. This was an old school, upscale city suburb. The old guard was NOT happy!
Cool and bit weird but this client hard us build this to put a swing that would last forever. I posted it online and some people hated it and some loved it. I personally like it a lot!
Here it is:
“Completed a clean, low maintenance backyard transformation in Katy, TX. The space now features a putting green with a flag, set against a backdrop of artificial turf for a consistent, year round look. A simple path of white square stepping stones leads through the yard, creating an easy flow from the home to the green. The design is finished with a stacked stone wall element and a brown wooden fence for privacy, giving the space a modern yet relaxed feel.”
I had never built a catio, but my client was adamant that she had one for her purr-baby. So, she gave me creative license. I went with a juxtaposition of a cat being in a bird’s natural habitat. So, I put the cat in a gilded cage, per se. Her cat loves lying in the massive cage built into the corner of the screened-in catio. At night, the internal bird cage serves as a pendant light. So fun to create this! I have great clients!!
We had a client request pricing on a pool design that lifts up from the bottom for safety for their young kids at the time and to not have to add fencing all around. I am not sure what the landscapers bid was, but they didn’t do it. That would have been wonderful, for the yard as well to gain the pool space back when not in use. I do love decks that slide over pools!
We haven’t had anything to crazy, but we did have to navigate a back yard to figure out the best way to manage the lake that formed in it every time there was extra water hanging around. This included sealing the basement from future water damage. With the help of our Landscaper ,I think we were able to manage it!
Love that tongue and groove ceiling! Classy!
